Default Won't let me install PTLE 8.0.4 on G5

I have a nicely setup late 2005 Mac G5 dual 2.3 Ghz with 16 Gb matching ram and a new Samsung 500 Gb HDD Sata 2 7200 rpm and a fresh clean install of OS X 10.5.8. HFS+ filing system.

When I click to install, the compatibility check goes to check, this is what I get:

Pro Tools 8.0.4 is not compatible with your Macintosh PowerPC computer and cannot be installed.

Searching the threads brings back nothing.

What am I missing? Please get your mallets and bang me over the head! I need direction!

Thank you in advance!

Hi Chris,

I have a brand new PTLE 8.0.4 Install disk, with an unused authorization code. (open Box sale) So that is my only option,

I have reviewed all the AVID OS X Leopard compatibility charts and no conflicts for OS X 10.5.8 with PTLE 8.0.4 are indicated in any way. Also, it is sold with AVID Online Support saying for OS X 10.5.5 or above to 10.6.3.

I hope this is not a hidden GOTCHA that will blow up in my face. Please say it isn't so!

Regards//Keith

If they tried to hide it, they did a lousy job.

8.0.1 is stated as they last release for PPC. See the 8.0.1 update page and scroll a little.

Sorry,
Bob

Hi Bob,

I wasn't looking at 8.0.1 because I wasn't installing it so I was drilling down on 8.0.4. My mistake.

I guess here is my fuzzy logic......... I have a last gen PPC that has Leopard on it. I didn't know that people put Leopard on an Intel platform as I was under the impression that it was for Mac PPCs. So why take PTLE to 8.0.5 and say it is compatible with Leopard 10.5.8. Did people put 10.5.8 on Intel based Macs for higher than PTLE 8.0.1?

I think I may just have wasted a lot of money buying this used G5 and upgrading it to this level ($500+)

Even in corresponding with AVID support, I told them what I had and was trying to get to PTLE 8 via an upgrade from 7.1, which was no longer available on AVID's site and this was never brought up.

So there's a few reasons why I am "here".

Is 8.0.1 a huge step backwards in stability and performance and features?

With such a HARD platform change, yet using the same OS, Digidesign should have changed the numbering sysyem from anything after 8.0.1 to 8.5.X to give some indication to a major disruption in platform.

Thanks for setting me straight. I'm quite disappointed and crushed as so much focus was placed on the OS and so little mention of the platform is anywhere that it might be helpful. (like on the outside of the Installer DVD package) Assuming the majority of 10.5.8 is on PPCs.

Quicksand I say!

Any thoughts would be appreciated!!! Thanks again!

Regards//Keith

Yeah, it's there and not so clear as the grids have sections for PPC and different for Intel below the Leopard.

Oh well. I have run into a wall Unless 8.0.1 is not a huge step backwards, maybe it's time to try a different DAW that will extend the life of this PPC.

Anybody have experience with something that would be a nice match for this G5?

Thanks (the HARD way!)

8.0.1 is not really any different from 8.0.5. I am now on 8.0.5 and can not tell any difference between the two.

8.0.1csr is the last version that will work with a PPC G5.

I used that setup for a long time. I was on Tiger and did not upgrade to leopard. When i got my new macbook pro with Lion, i updated to 8.0.5. I never ran Leopard with 8.0.1.

The irony is the serial would work with 8.0.1 just fine, i noticed this back when i had my 003R and my only conclusion was that they were skipping the PPC macs so they didn't have to support them, which makes sense.

If you get hold of Avid with your support code i'm sure they would digidelivery you an installer, worst case i'm sure a community member near you will help out!!!

Hi Chris,

Did you notice a huge performance difference when moving up to the Pro?

Was the PPC robust or was it lacking?

Now I'm questioning everything I've done to make better decisions moving forward. I could always sell the G5 and spend more and get into a faster setup with 9 or 10, but I am really a beginner, so to say.

But if I want to go Mac, The robust Pros are $$$$$ as you already know!

Thanks again!

Hi,

Yes, thank you, AVID has gotten back to me with an upgrade path by buying the upgrade to 7.4 (I have 7.1 on an older PC) and then getting me to 8.0.

I can find a good home for the 8.0.4 PTLE Installer Package. I just hope 8.0.1 has all the same Plug-Ins and Instruments and so on.

Or sell the G5 and add some more money and get into a new PC or Mac Pro and just upgrade once to 9 or 10. But I'm really a beginner so to say and don't know if I'll really see the value of that for a while.

Maybe I should look into Reaper. Supposedly the least processor hungry DAW out. Maybe that will give me more years on the PPC. Not sure how the Plug-Ins stack up to the "Air" suite that PTLE 8 has though. I am really looking forward to trying them.

Too many questions for a lame guitarist. Rock On!

Regards//Keith
