Journaled or Extended...

Hey there. I have heard from several people that it is better to format your external drives to Mac OS Extended if you are a Pro Tools user, but have also found some information online recommending using Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Does anyone have any info on what format works the best with Pro Tools?

You’d be better off if you’d get in the habit of consulting your equipment’s documentation first, and save the “take a poll ’round the internets” for when the former isn’t clear. It’s also faster, especially when you consider that all PT documentation is readily available as a downloadable set of pdf docs. (Never mind that it gets installed with the application.) Last but not least, these pdf docs are fully searcheable, making their use an efficient snap.

That said, page 71 of your “HD Getting Started Guide” goes like this:

Formatting Mac Audio Drives
(Mac Only)
For optimum performance, audio drives should
be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

You did not specify your OS X version, or ProTools version/platform. Pretty tough to get advice without providing basic information. Extended was right a few OS and ProTools versions back, now it is Journaled. As Andre suggests, it is all in the manual for your particular version of ProTools/OS. . .

Also:

If you are on an Intel:

Do not format your audio drives with the GUID partition table!

You will encounter problems when running such drives on PPCs. PT on PPC has problems with these drives. Some session won´t even open when you have audio referenced to GUID formatted drives.

Always use the Apple partition table. You only need GUID for boot partitions on Intel macs.

I hope they will fix that soon or at least put up a big sign in the manual or the web-site.
