Default 2017 Mac Mini (16Gb) & PT12?

Hi everyone

Having retired my iMac I have been using my MacBook Pro (Retina 15-inch, Mid 2014 with 16Gb RAM & 2.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor) to run PT12.7...it works great.

Rather than buy a new MBP or MBA for day to day business use i thought about getting a Mac Mini as I am using en external monitor over HDMI, a pro tools keyboard and a trackball mouse; thereby freeing up my trusty MBP.

The 2017 Mac Mini with a 2.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 upgraded with 16Gb Ram is in my budget but I've seen some people on the net suggesting an older version would be better?

What I have is running great and a new MacBook Air would only be a little bit more so would the advice be to get a new laptop or replace the MBP with a Mac Mini?

Thanks in advance for your help

For Pro Tools, use the best CPU you can afford.

To match the performance of your MacBook Pro, yes the 2012 i7 quad core Mac Mini is the one to get. After 2012 they no longer offered the quad core i7. Typically they have one drive installed, but you can get an aftermarket bracket kit and a 2nd HD ribbon cable which will allow you to install two drives. I have two Samsung 1TB SSDs in my 2012 Mac Mini and it rocks! FYI I run two HDMI displays off my 2012 Mini (one of them daisy chained off my UAD octo box on Thunderbolt) and I also have 16GB of aftermarket ram installed.

I am currently running PT12 over a Mac Mini with i5 and 16Gb (2015 model), and I am very happy. I use a lot of orchestral samples, and don't remember having any problem or a CPU or memory shortage whatsoever.
Hope this helps.
Regards

Here is what Avid's website says:

Supported Processors:
Late 2012 MacMini6,2 Core i7 'Ivy Bridge' 2.3 GHz

So the 2012 Mac Mini with the Quad Core i7 is fine for Protools 12.

Keep in mind that the Mac Minis have not seen an upgrade for several years and are probably due, maybe not the best time to get one IMHO.
