Default Output Issue

I recently hooked up a Mackie Onyx Artist 1.2 interface. It works well.

However, I thought I would be able to hear audio from other applications while PT is running. I set the Playback Engine to the Mackie ASIO driver, which is fine for PT. But, I still cannot hear other sounds from the laptop, not even the default chime from the speakers level adjuster.

I must be missing something. I know I had to restart PT when I switched to the Mackie ASIO driver, and the session saved and restarted. I thought having an interface would allow me to have PT open and still hear audio from other applications.

Please advise.

If your Windows sound settings aren’t set to output via the Mackie interface, then you won’t hear them.

You may have difficulty getting that working properly with PT running. Multi client interfaces don’t seem to work well on Windows like they do on a Mac.

It likely does not, and even if it did work at all you likely do not want to be doing this. The best plan if you need audio out of Windows is to route that from the internal PC sound card into separate monitors or a monitor controller (which might be built into higher end interfaces).

This topic is discussed in many many posts on DUC you can search for.
Thank you.

Which higher end interface could allow this option?
What is DUC?

Best to assign your onboard soundcard to play Windows sounds, so your main Pro Tools interface can be that and ONLY that.
Side note. We couldn’t get my UA Apollo 8 TB to play nice with Source Connect, so I use a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 for Source Connect and Windows audio. Sounds much better than the onboard sound card.

OT, but this may help. I too am on W10 and was having an issue with Pro Tools and Source-Connect. Using the Link Plug-in I was getting intermittent squeaks and squawks in the incoming signal from S-C. Not a problem for me as a voice talent as they weren't in the outgoing signal, so no issue at the studio end. Still, a bit irritating. S-C Support told me it was an issue with Windows and the plug-in that would be fixed in v4.0 of S-C (that new version has been "coming" for a long time). I was told to either use S-C standalone (which I thought would mean I couldn't record myself), increase the buffer in PT to 512 or better - not an option when voicing - and/or buy and use a separate interface when using S-C. I've got a $2,000 plus interface and no desire to purchase an additional one. Fortunately, the interface I do have, has a software mixer with Loopback, which allows me to route S-C into and out of Pro Tools and record myself (at 64 buffer) while using S-C standalone. Problem solved.

Does the UAD console allow you to do similar?

“Does the UAD console allow you to do similar?“

It might, but I haven’t had the time or inclination to mess with it. I use one of the matrix outputs on my Soundcraft console to feed the Focusrite for SC. So if I want to record on my end while I’m sending with Source Connect, that operation is totally independent. Anything I assign to 7-8 on the console feeds Source Connect. So I can send 1 into Protools to record locally, and 7-8 to feed SC simultaneously.

Ah. since you have a physical mixer then there is no need to use UAD's Console.
