Default 96i I/O with effects. How are you using it?

Hi,
I'm wondering, how are you guys (and girls) using your 96i I/O (the one with 16 in 2 out) with external effects like compressors, etc...? TRS inputs as mono inserts in-out?

Thank you

The 96i isn't really the ideal box for hardware inserts. You're going to be limited to two mono or one stereo hardware insert because you've only got two analog outputs that can be used as sends. I suppose you could use the S/PDIF as well if you've got digital outboard gear for a total of 4 channels.

Regardless, you would simply take analog out #1 to the hardware, and then return the signal on analog in #1. Then do the same for analog out/in #2. Then configure paths for those in the Inserts page of I/O setup. That's all you've got.

If you have alot of outboard gear, check out the 192 you can add an expansion card to it also for more ins or outs.
One thing to keep in mind, for, ADC to work correctly you need to have the unit in matching ins and outs, so, for example your compressor would need to send on #4 out and bring it back to #4 in.

Hi,

Only problem with adding an i/o card to a 192 is you can only add 1 input card or 1 output card. so its either 16 in 8 out OR 8 in 16 out.

buy either a 192 or 96i/o and add an 8 channel digital to analogue I/O. then you'll have 16 ins and out for your outboard.

or buy the new OMNI

Ok, I thought I was missing something.

"96i enables you to readily introduce output from third-party outboard gear — keyboards, samplers, effects, and other line-level equipment — into your Pro Tools environment".
I wonder what they mean by "effects"...

I suppose I'll try to find a good priced 192 or a rosetta 800.

I have a good option for a Digital 192 but then I need A/D converters anyway and I don't think I want to put a behringer ADA8000 between the preamps and the 192 don't you think?. Any ideas? How would you configure a Digital 192?

They carefully say outputs... so probably mean, for instance, send your guitar in clean, and with effects.. if you split the signal, or have separate outputs.
I can see how one could make the leap to "inserts"... sort of

best box for inserts is obviously the original 96 interface, it has 8 ins and 8 outs with trs connectors, that is the most cost effective way for the job

I'm thinking about a rosetta 200 actually,
The only reason a want extra in/out is to mixdown throught my rosetta 48 without patching or splitting the main ouputs.
Neither do I need more than 2 in right now so...

But I can get a 192 at the same price as the rosetta 200. What do you thing is better investment?

Thanks
