Default Smoking A Mix

My Mix is beginning to sound to clean after upgrading some few gadget in my studio for the Xmas! Neve 9098, Tube-Tech CL 1B, Distressor, Focusrite red 1, Waves L2 and Tascam DA-45 HR... Am strictly doing a Rap and Hip-Hop stuff, can any one recommends a dirty gear to smoke and darken a mix.

The Distressor can get pretty dirty if you drive the input hard with Dist 2 or 3. Have you experimented with that?

DuY's DaD Tape and DaD Valve are great for smoke. The "60's 2-Track" option in Tape (at a virtual 7 1/2 ips) and the "Snare Drum" preset in Valve. Valve is a little "smokier" and you can drive it HARD.

Errr... the distressors sound 'clean'? What are you doing to them?

Try Dist2 or Dist3. Also, when tracking try to hit the Link button without actually linking two units... nice sound variation. For room mics (or other tracks you'd like to compress heavily), try the Nuke ratio (the one with the nice blue LED), squash the **** out of the signal and blend this signal with the original, uncompressed track.
Maybe it's me, but I still have to find a nice clean setting on the Distressor... and loving every minute of it.

Cheers
Arthur
