-Hello fresh meat. Welcome. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. PTLE will run on a 9600, but you can get a nice used G3 these days pretty cheap.

don't blame the machine, I'm running the same system and pro tools has yet to crash. period. But if you got money to burn....definitely pick of a G4. I would just get my system looked at, get it stable, and use the money I would have for the g4 to buy an apogee trak 2. My opinion.

-Since he's already having trouble w/ the Windows machine, Mac is a good option. Don't think we're blaming the machine. Some compatibility issues are different hardware or software. I myself would rather get to using my tools than spend all day/week configuring them to work.

thanks for the replies guys

any suggestions on increasing stability?

everyone i ask normally just says "must be Windows ME.." but ive had no other problems with it.

this same system ran Vegas 20-30 tracks of 24/96 no problem

could it be the firewire drive? its a Maxtor 60gb 7200 rpm

i would like to keep my current system and make small changes if i can...

i dont really dancy the idea of spending $1300 on a new mac and the hassle of upgrading my friends old 9600 doesnt sound that great either...
especially as i just bought this new vaio last year

thanks again for helping a brother

-Get the 9600. It can and will rock. I've seen very nice 9600 TDM and LE sytems. The 9600 should have no problem. It could be a combo Firewire/PC hassle. Firewire is not totally solid on PT/Mac yet either but getting much better. Hope this helps 'ya out...

thanks guys...i suppose just having a 9600 around for cheap will be cool to run Logic of Reaktor or something and sync it to a more powerful machine if i end up getting it.

thanks again

Just a thought ... I've seen G4 400/450/500 models going for under a grand, and as low as $700 on ebay. I would also keep your eye on www.powermax.com as they always have good selection of used G4s on the cheap.

Good luck!
