This is a dumb as a rock plain non-switched card. It will directly wire a NVMe M.2 SSD card to 4 x PCIe 2 lanes in a Mac Pro. What you want is a switched card like the one I have pointed out earlier that takes the pairs of PCIe 2 lanes though a switch and gives you a PCIe 3 lane. That was the whole point. Double the raw IO performance out of your tired old Mac Pro cheesegrater.

And no I am not worried by feedback from a random Amazon purchasers. These cards are absolutely designed to run with a single M.2 NVMe card.
Ok this brings up one more question or may I am not quite understanding.

As I understand it on my Mid 2010 machine it has 2 PCIe 16 lane slots (the bottom 2) and two 4 lane slots (top two) I was planning on putting the Crest double adaptor in the top slot (4 lane) ? But do have to put it into a 16 lane slot or can it placed in a 4 lane slot (and does that reduce performance) ?

The reason I ask is because I have the Graphics card in the bottom slot 16 lane (as per factory)
and the PTHDN card in the 2 nd from the bottom (16 lane) as per the placement done at the Pro shop where I bought the Mac and PTHDN card from.

So my next question is. If the Crest absolutely needs to go a 16 lane slot, can the PTHDN card go in a 4 lane ???

Because I read this from Apple support forum
The allocation of slot-speeds on the 2009 through 2012 Mac Pro is fixed, not configurable, and is exactly as you state: the two lowest slots are 16x slots, the two upper slots are 4x speed, but "provide support for up to 16x cards" (in other words, they use the largest connectors, but everything beyond 4x is not connected). How does this jive with the Crest ?

Absolutely can!

Think of it as "HDX card without DSP" and then continue thinking that you can have a HDX3 on the same box. Now if 4x would not be enough for HDX then it would also be limited to one card system -- AND, if the 4x slot is good enough for HDX it is surely good enough for HDN.

Look it is simple. With that switched adapter card you need twice the PCIe 2 lanes as in your Mac Pro as PCIe 3 lanes on the M.2 cards. One M.2 card you need 8x PCIe 2 lanes, two M.2 cards you need 16x PCIe 2 lanes. Talking electrical lanes of course, not just slot widths.

IIRC HDN is 1 lane x PCIe 1 electrical in a PCIe 4 physical card. You could not find a more wimpy card spec if you tried...

Ok... another question. What if I use a non switching pcie card with 1 m.2 drive in a x4 slot. Is it still much better than a pcie card with a regular ssd on it?

“regular SSD”?.... I would argue NVMe is now the regular SSD and SATA is some old slow legacy stuff.

M.2 NVMe on 4 x PCIe 2 ? Yes still much faster than a SATA III drive.

I used to have a pci card that held 2 SSDs. If you use them as 2 separate drives, you could hope to get 500 from each. More if you raided them together as one. But twice the risk of failure.

From a single m2 drive in an older non switching card, like what I have now, it maxed out at 1500 even if the drive itself is over twice as fast like the 970 Pro I have.

Still pretty fast compared to standard ssd on pcie. Interesting. Those nvme non switching pcie cards are cheap. For protools and audio storage that is probably the way to go.

Also what model older non switching pcie card for nvme m.2 blades are you using? If you don't mind.

Ghostwriter, right or wrong, I appreciate your shot at answering my previous question (either way Darryl will slap us around if we get it wrong! . Online communities work best when everyone participates. I'm probably going to do the same thing you are, same card, same dual drives (although I may spring for the big bucks and put two 2TB NVMe drives on the card. As I understand it they will read as two separate drives). The only difference is you have a 2012 Mac Pro and I have Mid-2010. Reading through previous posts I don't think that will make a difference (I hope). Keep us posted as to how it goes.
