suggestions on firewire hd problem...

this is driving me nuts.
i have gone through approx. 8 maxtor firewire hd's and most recently 2 lacie's.

all of them have just died on me. they just stop working (fail to mount on any computer). one of them i had to send to disk savers, whose bill, really got to me. i can't seem to track down a certain event that stops them from working.

after about 5 drives dying the whole firewire bus on my g4 466mhz stopped working!! no other devices worked on it! so I bought an adaptec pci firewire card and the hard drives still keep dying on me.

does anyone have any suggestions on what this could be? i have two thoughts:
static/electricity in the room that might be getting to the hd's somehow (I AM using a good surge protector! maybe there is a better one!)
or
my computer (however, both the built-in firewire ports and the adaptec card have done it to the hd's)

any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. of course if it is the computer I'm really screwed since i have a digi002 and can't buy a new computer yet!!! so no backup for me for awhile...
