Default Step Input and Input Quantize..

Im a bit confused on these two functions. Do i just need to press enable input quantize, and it will work? Or di i have to highlight a region and apply it. How does this work? Does it automatically align to the grid in real time while i am playing a drum part?

I am new to protools but am learning it very quickly. I am finding that the MIDI is very different to Sonar but should work fine for me. Now for your question. I will answer with a routine that I do to make drum tracks using the quantize. First I play kick on the 1/2 note on one track. Quantize that to 1/2 notes. I then put snare on the 1/4 notes and quantize that track to the 1/4 notes. 1/8ths on the high hat and Q 1/8 etc. This will give you a tight reference track to lay down your audio or midi. All drums are on channel 10 but separated by different track numbers (so that I can mix them individually). The click feature on an aux track is a cool feature on my version 6.7. I am running winxp with sweetwater cube 3.2ghz 800fsb glyph drives 1.5 g ram. No problems here. I hope this helps

Input Quantize will quantize AS you record. You can quantize an existing midi track with the quantize function. I prefer to quantize after I record and sometimes will only quantize certain notes rather than make the entire track (mathematically) perfect as it doesn't sound very real.
