cleanest vari speed
Hi all.
I am in the process of archiving some old analog tapes to daw. They were recorded at 30 ips. My friend baked them and is transferring at 15 ips, the format of his Revox. Not a problem, I know I can easily double the speed. As long as I don't mess with the pitch/time correlation. Planning on using the "Time Shift" from audio suite. Just to make sure I'm on the right track, I figured I'd do a little test. I took some material from a well recorded cd. Duplicated the track, and threw the duplicate out of phase. Signal disappeared. Next, I took the original, and brought it to half speed, to simulate my reel, as follows: Finally, I doubled the speed to get it back to normal, as follows: I figured if it went perfectly, my two tracks should still cancel each other out. They don't. I mean, the track that got slowed down and sped back up sounds amazing and through my nice Sony headphones I can't tell the difference. Am I doing it wrong or just geeking out too much? Re: cleanest vari speed
What sample rate are the files recorded at?

Re: cleanest vari speed
Create a new session at 44.1. Use file>import>audio and select all the 1/2 speed files to import by copy. Before importing, enable the sample rate conversion (Apply SRC) and manually set the source sample rate to 88,200. Click done.

Re: cleanest vari speed
So if I'm to understand this process, we are manually tricking pro tools into thinking that the incoming file is 88.2, and we are changing it to 44.1 for use in session?

Re: cleanest vari speed
That said, shouldn't we be setting the source sample rate to 22.05?

Re: cleanest vari speed
If they’re half speed at 44.1, doubling the sample rate will double the speed and pitch same as with tape. If you manually set to 22.05, you’ll be halving the already half speed. ie: dropping to 1/4 speed.
