Default Recording in Pro Tools without an Interface?

I just bought PT11 and am finding it really confusing and complicated! I'm trying to literally just record audio (my voice for example) using the built in mic in the laptop because I haven't been able to buy an interface just yet. I configured the Playback engine to the built in mic and tried the arrepegiator 1/0 as well, and still won't work. Any ideas? I've been trying for days

Can you post a screenshot of your I/O setup, Input section ?
And a screenshot of the audio track you want to record, so we can see the input "built in mic" and the record enabling there ?
When you speak in to that mic, do you get an indication in some windows sound setting ?

Yeah this is the setup, but even with aggregate I/O selected, it doesn't show up for the I/O section in the mix window on the channel.

  1. Click the Setup menu, and choose I/O.
  2. You will find several tabs. Click the input tab and then click the button on the bottom that says "default".
  3. Now click the output tab, and click the "default" button again.

Click OK, and you should now have the correct I/O choices available for your inputs. I can't recall offhand what the labels are for aggregate devices, but it should be easy to determine which is the mic.

The default button is greyed out, in fact all the options are greyed out and won't let me choose any of them in the Input section of the I/O.

I've never seen the default button greyed out before.

To clarify, you are looking at a window that looks similar to this? http://i.imgur.com/DEpOACg.png

It's that same box except it's all empty, no options to click anything.

Strange. It's completely blank. What does your Setup > Playback Engine window look like?
