After Avid took over in 1995, the company really started listening to users a lot more, at least to those of us in film post, and there was a huge drop in the amount of advertised features that didn't work. There has also been a steady improvement in audio quality.

Many of the nay-sayers today are talking about pre-Avid Digidesign and I was certainly among the more outspoken. Today they listen to users the best of any developer I know.

Cool Re: what good things happened??

I may have my dates wrong here, but I believe since the mid 90's when Avid acquired Digi, we have gotten:

MIDI
Tab to Transient
Beat Detective
Stereo Tracks
PTLE and PTMP
RTAS
Control Surfaces
etc.

To name a few. Lots of stuff.

Pre '95 Pro Tools was pretty primitive, kinda like a tape recorder with recall, plugins and simple editing. And I think only 16 tracks until PTIII around '94.

All those features would be great if the the basic program didn't have so many problems. To be fair I'd say the real rot is the last 4-5 years. Lot of features added and still CS update after CS update to fix things for every release.
Features bring in the cash.

All in all pro Tools has been adding features consistently since Avid took control, but because of the old code base, the features bring with them added instability until PT8 where instability peaked for the first year and now is becoming somewhat improved. This being posted on the LE forum one should note that most of the features added here are not the features that have been the most requested by users but rather the ones Avid has felt best with.

Lots of added features that worked out well I think. Preview/Capture mode. Well balanced keyboard modifier system. Clean interface. Good automation editing overall. Decent control surfaces(minus the Procontrol volume knob incident). Decent scrubbing.

As for other stuff, Avid plain lied to us about delivery. Bins, clip editor and Audiosuite handles come to mind, which were never delivered. The AudioVision fiasco. Others they just plain screwed up. I heard from some insiders that redefinable keyboard shortcuts was planned for around 5.x, but was cut because it wasn't sexy enough to sell Protools. I hope the guy that made that decision was kicked out. Hard.

Some great stuff, some really bad stuff. You love it when it works right and hate it when it screws up. It's screwed up a lot lately and just kept piling up. Now I'm rather blase about Avid and Protools. I can't bring myself to care. No trust left. Too much going wrong wasting my time.

Avid announced they were buying Digidesign in 1994, it was in the Boston Globe.

One thing I love is the ADC feature that was added. It makes slapping on Auto-Tune Evo or Drumagog as an RTAS plug-in seamlessly awesome and latency-free!

Instrument tracks, MIDI Editing, Windows support, Playlists.....

Of course since some of the basic code is extremely creaky its all kinda seems like frosting on a rock some time.
