Default Drives on both sides of 2940UW?

I have a 2940UW with a 9gig on the external port in a Glyph enclosure. D24 card on 9600-350. I'd like to add a n 18gig scsi but it won't fit in the Glyph enclosure. Can I put the new drive inside the Mac and hang it off the internal connector of the adaptec? It would need to be a recording drive for Protools as well as the existing 9 gig. Right now there is nothing on the cards internal connector. The system drive and other peripherals are on the Mac's own scsi chain.
Is anybody doing this? If they both need to be on the adaptec's external connector, I can buy another case for the new drive but thought I'd just put it inside if it would work.
Thanks for your opinions!

Hi Steve,I think it says in the manual you can't run another 68 pin drive, hence the 3940Uw.I thought about it too!

I've got a similar setup with the same SCSI card. Currently, I have an 18G and 9G drive running in series on the external connector, and everything is fine. But I've also run a setup where I used both the external and internal connectors for PT drives. In this case, one of the drives had a 50-pin interface, and I actually bought a cheap adapter to bring the internal SCSI bus out to an exernal-style interface to connect to this drive. (It's true that you cannot use the internal 68-pin interface and the external interface simultaneously.) The adapter mounted into a PCI slot, but this is not strictly necessary (there's no PCI card, just a connector). Anyway, all my drives were physically external, but I was using both internal (50-pin) and external SCSI connections on the 2940, and it worked fine. I have no data on which way would have the highest throughput potential, but it's more convenient to use fewer buses, and I'm getting some high playback track counts (up to 43 so far) with no problem.

Yes, you can.

Things to remember: Terminate, Terminate, Terminate.

I believe there was a cable with an active terminator packaged with the card, so use that. Also, there are three connectors on the inside of the card, You want the one farthest away from the back of the card - that way you'll be using two busses.

Good luck

on that card you can only use the narrow internal if you are using the external connection, as was previously stated.

I have a 2940UW on a PT pro system
Internal and external drives running simultaneously, pulling 64 track with lotsa edits, no problem.
Its great to have a internal removable drive caddy system,UW caddies aren't hard to find these days.

Before I upgraded to a G4 I was running a 9500
with a Mix system and 2 dsp farm cards and the 2940UW. I had three 9 gig external drives and one 36 gig internal drive connected to the 68 pin interface on the 2940UW. You just have to make sure that the last drives on the internal and external chains are terminated. The internal drive should have active termination. In this case the 2940UW should have its own termination defeated. This set-up worked great for me.

If you do that, remember that the internal drive will run as a narrow device. This is according to Adaptec.

As I 'remember' my internal 36 gig was running in a wide configuration. This is what Power Domain reported. I have scoured my manual and the Adaptec web site and can find nothing about the internal 68 pin switching to narrow when the external connector is used. Is there something I missed at the Adaptec site?

If you have a 2940UW, yes I think you must have missed something. You can use either a wide device on the external OR the internal, but not both.
