I thought we were really on to something on these Sandy Bridge threads for the old PCIx cards. Now with the Pro Tools 10 release, we obviously have to question whether to build a new system to support the old cards, or just save the money, and build a newer (chipset) system, and finally take the plunge into HD|Native or HDX.

I really want that floating bus!

Anyone feel the same?
After weighing my options, rather than trading up to HDX or pay $999 just for a software upgrade, I purchased an old Mix Core card off eBay. Sweetwater is still offering the $1,500 exchange to move from legacy hardware to HD Native. I'm going to swap the Mix Core card for an HD Native card. Then I'm going to put more memory in my old Core2Quad system and upgrade the OS to Windows 7 64-bit and move the HD cards back to it. That will be my legacy-compatible system.

The new i7 system on the Jetway board will get the Native card in it, along with my UAD2 card. I'm going to give HD Native a shot as a full system and see what kind of performance I get out of it. If I'm satisfied with Native, the HD rig will probably be stuck in a closet and stored in case I ever need it for any legacy compatibility, or maybe used as a B system or live tracking rig if I put it in a rackmount chassis.

If I'm not fully satisfied with tracking through the Native system, then I'll set up the HD rig as my tracking rig and use the Native system to mix.

Total cost to me will be around $2k, twice what the software upgrade would cost, but I'll end up with two working systems - one with PT9 HD|2 Accel (no room for the third card on the old system) and one with PT10 HD|Native.
