how would I upgrade from pro tools express to pro tools 11? is pro tools express considered pro tools 10 right?

What exact version of express do you have--from what exact product bundle? Only Avid bundles qualify for upgrades, not third party interface bundles. A good place to look is the Avid online store or contact an Avid dealer if you have questions. If it's the fast track solo in you signature then you should be set if you go to the Avid store and just buy an upgrade.

Avid no longer just sells Pro Tools 11, you would purchase a Pro Tools 12 upgrade which gives you a license that actually runs Pro Tools 10, 11, 12.

I think so, you check with a dealer like Sweetwater to be sure. Just call 'em up and do the whoel transaction with them.
