Monitors upright or on their sides??

I would be more worried about reflections off of any console or other surface right in front of the speakers. I don't have the HS8's but do have the MSP5's and the sweet spot for frequencies coming from the tweeter does change a little. Don't know much of a difference it makes in dispersion but the MSP5's are front ported.

I recommend NOT having the speaker stands be a part of the desk. It's WAY too limiting. And will likely make the monitors too close to you. And what if you change speakers? I can almost guarantee you'll regret it.

I have all my speakers on separate stands. The Barefoots are custom made for them, but the NS10s and JBLs are on inexpensive store bought ones.

Interesting! I just found a pdf file online for my Alesis Monitor Twos, and it turns out I have had them set up wrong for years. The tweeter sits between the woofer and the mid-range, about 2/3 the way up from the bottom. Depending on which speaker you are looking at, the tweeter is either on the far left or far right side of the speaker, about 3 inches from the side. I had my speakers positioned so that the tweeters on each speaker were on the "outside" of each speaker. They should be on the "inside" of each speaker when facing the speakers, in other words, the tweeters should be closer to each other rather than farther apart. Alesis could have made set up easier by labeling the speakers left and right, but instead they labeled them A and B.

I doubt whether my poor mixing skills will be impacted by swapping the speaker positions, but at least now I have them positioned correctly.

What size screen do you use?

I've wanted to go bigger than my 27" for awhile but was concerned about my monitors being too close to each other.

Daniel: Check your speaker's manual. Mine says the speakers should be no closer together than 60" (center to center) and the sweet spot for the user to sit would be 60" from each speaker. To widen the sweet spot if 2 people are listening, the speakers should be angled less toward the center.
