In addition to other resources it seems to use a crazy amount of memory, on my Mac Pro 2013 the app and helper are using a total of 800MB. And it's not downloading any updates or anything, it's just sitting there doing "nothing" except using a lot of system resources.

Mine shows a notification every day that there is 1 plug-in update available. Except, there never is. I click on the "Products" icon and there is nothing showing an update.

You had one job! Terrible software. And the way it cannot remember log in info for a single user account is quite sad.

Burn it to the ground.

The tragedy is that Pro Tools itself is a moderately complicated piece of software that gets deep into the operating system - so Avid must have programmers who know what they're doing. What happened with Avid Link? Did they farm it out?

... almost certainly it was farmed out to GlobalLogic the outsoucing company Avid has been using for years as it has reduced its engineering headcount. Link has all the bloatware attributes of modern badly written software. Huge size, layers of dependency crap, out of date modules, potential security risks, etc. And like many outsourcing companies, I would not be surprised if GlobalLogic did not propose the need for this, and helped Avid folks think they are in control and be owning collecting/reporting on the project “success”/adoption to Avid execs. This crapware/bloatware just gets uninstalled immediately after a Pro Tools install on my systems. I just wonder how much overall Avid has spent on this, with a potential highest cost of opportunity cost... what if they had spend similar on fixing/adding core DAW features or retaining core DAW developers? ...

I don’t have a problem with farming out. However, a big problem is the lack of communication between the teams working on Pro Tools and the Avid Link app.
Most of the components that are displayed in the Avid Link app are also available directly inside Pro Tools under the Avid Link menu. But they didn’t even care about organizing them in the same/similar hierarchy. It is a complete mess, just gobbled together with no respect to the actual user who have to figure out what is what (look at the screenshot).

My suspicion is that a memo came from the beancounter department at AVID with an order to make something to shove a shopping cart in the user’s face whenever possible. “Users should spend their time browsing through items they could (should) buy instead of using Pro Tools to get their work done”.

Before you uninstall:

The best thing about Avid Link is jeffro’s guitar – 1st cab off the rank under the “Find Talent” tab

Just launched Link for the first time in ages since I did a PT update and hadn't uninstalled it yet.

The Find Talent, Messages and Lounges tabs are completely non-functional. Even if they were, I see no value in this whatsoever. Maybe I'll try back in a couple more years.

Strange – definitely works OK here – did you sign in after launching?
