Default PSA: Make sure to cancel your Pro Tools Expert "subscription"

A public service announcement to any of you who have a Pro Tools Expert -- Pro Tools Expert - Avid Pro Tools -- subscription and don't realize it is a subscription. Make sure to cancel your Pro Tools Expert "subscription" before you are billed again.

If you've paid for a year membership you have been subscribed to automatically renew. I didn't realize this and when I was automatically billed £20.00 GBP for another year of membership.

The day Pro Tools Expert debited my PayPal account £20.00 GBP, I wrote to them asking for a refund because I didn't want another year of membership, and they ignored my email. I followed up with another email days later and they replied and said no, and that I should have realized it was a subscription.

They already have my money and don't care that I don't want another year of membership. I think this type of business practice is quite shortsighted.

So, moral of the story is check your PayPal account for any subscriptions you don't realize you have and terminate them before your account is debited. Not all websites care if you actually want their services, or how they take your money.

And it's a good reminder to me to read the fine print. I do subscribe to them and know the deal, but I have had other places I have subscribed to that I failed to read the fine print for - and paid the price as you did! Thanks for the heads up to check on things I don't want!

Good warnings guys, as after we go buying our many plugins, good, mics etc etc etc , every dollar counts.

- Add Mac Pro Video - to the list , as when you purchase a Month subscription , you are then automatically billed every month there after .

It is possible to cancel the subsciption for the ongoing months , but you must go to the FAQ section to find out how , as there is no other obvious means to do so from your dashboards account access.

I went through this nightmare a few months back. Here's the story:

I was subscribed to the old format site when Russ and company decided to completely rework things and go to a new format and site. When the new site became live they comped people who had time left on the old site subscription with time on the new site. To do that they had people sign up under what was a special trial subscription but that trial was not just a time limited one but whatever timer you had left on the old sub. Sneaky thing they did was they asked for your credit card number. So I signed up.

Months go by and I can access the site no problem. Then I get a credit card statement with a charge on it I didn't recognize. I call up the card company and ask about this and they say it was about some video I had purchased. Well on the date of the charge I wasn't even at home or on the 'net from anywheres. So naturally I suspected my card had been hacked and had the account closed and a new card issued.

Turns out that through a lot of research the charge was from the new PTE site. I had never gotten any email from them that my old sub had run out and that my card would be charged from a certain date forward. Trying to get a hold of anyone from PTE was infuriating as contact through their website was impossible through Firefox and Safari wasn't any better. Both sites for days on end would throw up 404 errors. Finally was able to get in touch with someone (not any of the pTE people like Russ) and get the account closed following their instructions - they wouldn't do it themselves. Even after that for a couple of months they kept trying to charge my old card (the one that had been canceled); I knew that because I kept getting emails from the charging site saying payment was denied.

Long story short - it isn't and won't be easy getting the subscription canceled. You may have to fight it on two fronts like I did.

Yeah - I know about fine print and such but if they had at least sent out an email saying the subscription had expired and that my card would be charged and if I wanted to cancel to do so following this link things would have been a lot easier.

Chump business practices > I'm glad I didn't follow them when they started charging

Hell they bludgeoned Avid verbally for subscription services and then followed suit themselves, you know what's that's called...?

And I thought it was just me that figured as much. Life is so much better now that I'm PTE-less.
