Default 002rack signal flow....

I have a 002 rack and a Soundcraft board. I am curious as to how the hookups need to go. i.e. Channel 1 is a microphone, channel 2 is a mono-out drum machine, channels 3 and 4 are a stereo keyboard patch. I want to be able to use the EQ on the board after I've done any EQ'ing in ProTools. So, would that mean I hook up the above to the 002 ins.....then hook the corresponding outs to the "ins" 1 through 4 on the board? If I wanted to use the board EQ's pre and post 002, how would I do that? I'm sorry I'm confused. Damn, I just look at wiring and get so overwhelmed that I have a damn-near anxiety attack.

Please help.

Cloodle Book

The board I have has 20 mono channels, 4 stereo channels, and 8 busses. So I have a little bit of flexibility I think...I hope.

Using the analog board is just overcomplicating everything. Skip the mixer and grab a decent set of plugins like Waves Gold Bundle and you won't miss the Soundcraft. That's my 2 cents and I've spent 18 years on analog consoles and love several, but I do all my recording "in the box". It saves headaches with extra conversion latency, extra wiring, extra space and extra noise-generating analog circuitry.

Well, I'd love to forget about the board but I'd feel guilty. I don't want him to be the leftout nerd who's picked last for kickball. That's been my big debate about the board/002rack combo since my 002 arrived by UPS a few days ago. Do I want to run everything into the board first before going into ProTools....or do I want to use the 002 pre's and then use the boards EQ section when everything is on the way out, so I'll just have to start keeping track of how I had the EQ settings for each song. Any opinions on this....suggestions.....possible routing ideas? Thanks!

Lesson 8 ,

This is what I'd like to suggest not knowing your boards lay out;
-Have the incoming mic signals at the left side of the Soundcraft. Use the channels direct outs or the 1-4 buss assigns if more sources need to go to the same recording track. The direct outs 1/2/3/4 OR the bus outs 1/2/3/4 (depending on above) should feed the 002R's line inputs 5/6/7/8
-that way you'll have four 002 micamps available also.
-coming out of PT, use the right side to "monitor" and route 002R line outs 1>8 to the board.
Assign their channels to Soundcraft L&R main to monitor/mix.
The assignments might be different, adjust to what is available.

As albee1952 pointed out, this is not necessary in order to have a fully functional 002 setup without your board. But..you have asked, so above is my suggestion.

happy tooling,

As
