Default Pro Tools takes a very long time to load / startup (and quits unexpectedly often)

When I try to open Pro Tools the icon in the dock will bounce for about 20/30 seconds, then it stops bouncing and looks like it's failed to open, but then about a minute later it begins to open. While loading the main startup image (with the green progress bar) I can't do anything in any other open application because with each new bit of progress Pro Tools switches back as the forefront application.

Another thing, maybe related. While working Pro Tools will give me the spinning beachball every hour or so, think for a minute, then crash. Which is really great. Coupled with the 3 minute start time it makes for a sweet workflow (at least it forces me to take a break every once in a while)

Thanks for any ideas!

I share your pain. Have no idea what is up with this. I'm running PT8, did a clean install twice, Mac Pro 8-core running 10.5.6, updated to 10.5.8, still doing the dock bouncing thing.

Has your situation changed?

Additionally, loading Xpand2 or Vacuum or other factory instruments causes a beachball and a 50 - 60 second pause.

If you just started with ProTools 8, give it a lot of time, maybe it´s updating the hardware. It took a very long time for me, too.

Just wait an hour or so and see what happens.

So, have upgraded to PT 8.0.1 and done the latest update to Mac OSX 10.5.8. Thought I had the problem licked but then it came back again, the endless dock bouncing, then idle, then boot up. Some plug ins still taking up to 30 sec to load, as well. Steps I have taken:

repair permissions
delete digi databases
delete catalogs and volumes
delete digi OSX setup

Any insights? This is getting old...

For what it's worth, I ended up uninstalling PT 8.0.1 and reinstalling PT8.0.0, and that seems to have cured my problems for the most part. I'd recommend doing that instead of enduring constant crashes and hangs…
