Unhappy protools 8 stuck during 003 rack firmware update

well, I finally got to installing leopard and pt8 today, and i have run into a snag. Everytime i launch protools i get a prompt to update my firmware on the 003r but during the update it freezes up while it says initializing controllers. I cant recall the firmware version #'s7.4 something and 8.0 something. I'M on a quadcore mac pro. Has anyone delt with this. I really wanna put this project to bed tonight so any help would be appreciated!

It can take quite a while, somewhere around 10 minutes, mine was about 15 minutes. It looked locked up so I rebooted the computer the first time only to see it still needed the firmware update so the second time I just sat and watched nothing happen for 10 minutes and then I saw the splash screen change and voila a few minutes later it was done. 10 minutes is like 4 hours when your really anxious to get going....

Hmm...I've let mine sit for 30 minutes, to no avail. I restarted and let it try again for 15 minutes, but again, nothing. I'm going to try one more time.

FWIW I just got a 003 and only have a fresh install of 7.4.2. The firmware update took about 20 minutes or more. It would sit a one point for quite awhile before moving on.

I Just did yet another firmware update again on my rack3 and it was a solid 30 minutes! been running PT 8.05 and this is the buggiest setup over the years. PT 4,5,6 were all pretty much trouble free along with the Mix card setup. I am hoping it took this time as I often get errors that it lost communication with firewire etc. we put in budget for new PT11 mbox rig for next year, hope it gets approved.
