Default Direct Monitoring VS PT Monitoring

Since going to PT9, i have been using an RME Raydat PCIe card with Totalmix direct monitoring. All is well, but I keep seeing people posting that monitoring from Pro Tools at 32 samples or 64 samples for buffer is fine. I decided to measure the latency of my RME to see if perhaps I am just being overly sensitive to latency.

I setup a loop back with my Hearback system, and one without it. I work at 48k, so that is where all these measurements are.

The results.
With Hearback
Totalmix = 69 samples/1.4ms
Pro Tools 64 buffer = 341 samples/7.1ms
Pro Tools 32 buffer= 245 samples/5.1ms

Without Hearback
Totalmix = 36 samples/0.75ms
Pro Tools 64 buffer = 308 samples/6.4ms
Pro Tools 32 buffer = 212 samples/4.4ms

In my case, monitoring through Pro Tools is still not acceptable.

Hi Lynn,

I'd like to have a chat and pick your brain, I'm using PT9 on a 003 and thinking about moving on to a new Interface and PT10...

Please message me with contact info, so I can contact you.

Thanks,
Michael

Yeah, I purchased PT9 a year or two ago since it was finally available in a native version. I came from Cubase. Figured I'd just become a Pro Tools person since it was so widely used. I was very disappointed that you couldn't do direct monitoring with PT, something I've always taken for granted with Cubase. That and the fact that in PT9 you could only mixdown in realtime, caused me to stay with Cubase. I still own PT9 but it's just gathering virtual dust...
