You can adjust the waveform display so you can "see" all the peaks in the wav file

A lot of people use Meter Plugins to see true dB instead of using the meters on the software
Thanks for the suggestions. Ill definitely check out the meters plugin. I meant meter clipping

Are you overlooking a limiter on your master bus?

I mix into a limiter on my master bus and when bringing in reference tracks they'd get "double mastered" and sound horrible.

I played with my routing so the limiter was no longer on my master bus but on a previous mix bus that went out to the master for my mix and the reference tracks go straight out the master bypassing the limiter.

All is now well.

I've tried converting them to 24 bit, just bringing them in at 16 bit...no difference. What basic critical step might I be overlooking? Thanks

What sampling rate are you importing into? SRC does create some nasty overs, CD's can only be properly imported into 44.1 sessions. If you need to have audio from CD into session of different SR, create a 44.1 session first, import there and lower the gain say 10db and import that lower level file into your session.

For A/B'ing I have found a better way of running my DAW and CD Player (mac optical out) into the *volume knob* device both digital, so comparison is easy and no SR issues will happen as the *volume knob* device follows the clock as needed.
