Yeah, personally, as I did, go ATi HD 5400 series (512 MB) as the drivers are more current. AMD go through Video Cards like underwear.

I'm having random lock-ups in Windows. It also does not do well recovering from sleep or hibernate. Anyone have any ideas what the problem is? Below is my Sandra.
Thanks for any help!

Hi Kachunk;

I would begin by unplugging the scanner and USB devices that are not relative to PT.

Default Re: i7 Builds - Specs and Results

I'm FINALLY getting into the game. i have been picking up parts here and there, and now that 7 is supported, i am going to go that route.

I have an Evercase 4 RU case, intel i7 930 CPU, Giga UD3R mobo, Noctua CPU cooler,
OCZ 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model OCZ3X1600R2LV6GK, some Caviar Blacks (1 TB and 500 GB), and an ASUS video card.

I think i have it all plugged in together right, but i am waiting on my Win 7 to get delivered. should be in wednesday, i think.

it looks like i have a lot of things to check on (drivers), so i think i'll go check those out now.

i have been reading some of the initial posts over and over again, and i am concerned about ram timings and frequency. i want a fast and stable computer to run pro tools on. it sounds like i will undoubtedly get one once this build is complete, but i don't know if i want to (or need to) overclock it. i am a newb as far as builds go, so i don't know if this is a need issue. i will most likely need help in setting some of that up, and i have a few local guys that could help me if our schedules collide... but a giant THANK YOU goes out to the guys who blazed this path last year. i am very grateful for all of the direction and help you have given, making this task a lot more attainable.

Default Re: i7 Builds - Specs and Results

Hello All,

Thanks for sharing all the information about i7 here. I have been reading through this thread last couple of days and decided to upgrade my Q6600 based machine to an i7, mainly because the motherboard I currently have is not qualified to run Windows 7 and I have started to have some issues with system locking up more often than I can handle. I have already ordered the CPU, RAM, and MB, based on many recommendations. I am planning to use most of the other items from my current setup and upgrade only if I have to. Here are the items that I will have:

Motherboard - Gigabyte LGA1366 SATA3 ATI CrossFireX ATX Motherboard GA-X58A-UD3R
CPU - Intel Core i7 Processor i7-930 2.80GHz 8 MB LGA1366 CPU, Retail BX80601930
RAM - Corsair TR3X6G1600C8D Dominator 6 GB 3 x 2 GB PC3-12800 1600MHz 240-Pin DDR3 Core i7 Memory
HD 1 - System - HITACHI Deskstar P7K500 HDP725050GLA360 (0A35415) 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s
HD 2 - Audio - Western Digital Caviar Blue WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s
HD 3 - Backup - Western Digital Caviar Blue WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s
FireWire - SIIG 3-PORT 2 Ext. & 1INT.FIREWIRE - NN-440012-S8
Power Supply - Antec EarthWatts EA650 650W Power Supply
Video Card - EVGA 256-P2-N751-TR e-GeForce 8600 GT 256 MB PCI-Express Graphics Card
Case - ENERMAX ICS443SB Silver/Black Aluminum / Steel 4U Rackmount Aluminum 4U Rackmount Case
OS - Windows 7 Professional 32bit

Here are some questions:

1 - The Windows 7 32bit OS I have was purchased as a Vista Business Upgrade and only came with a 32 bit DVD. I understand that the license key is the same for both 32 and 64 bit system. Is there a way to get a 64 bit Windows 7 Professional install disc? I would like to wipe out the HD and start fresh with a 64 bit system.
2- Anyone else using the video card I have? will there be any issues after i upgrade to 64 bit OS?

Thanks!

Shaz

OK, after an hour of transferring my calls, MS finally sent me a DL link to Win7 64bit, so I am downloading it now.

Can someone please comment on the video card "EVGA 256-P2-N751-TR e-GeForce 8600 GT 256 MB PCI-Express Graphics Card" and let me know if there would be any issues with the configuration?

Thanks in advance!
