Default how to get that u2 the edge guitar sound?

1)what amps are used?
2)how long is the delay time for that signature guitar delay? 1/4 note? 1/8 note?
4)with tons of feedback, right?
5)is the delay the only fx? does it have a touch of chorus/flanger/pitch shifter?
6)if anyone knows exactly what he uses, ie, the signal chain and what processors, please let me know.

thanks

tom

The delay isn't triplets, it's a dotted 1/8 note. If you've got a delay chart with milliseconds. I dont' have a chart in front of me, but I think this is a way to calculate it from that. Take the difference between the 1/4 note delay time and 1/8 delay time and divide by 2. Subtract this from the bigger number and you have your setting.

Classic Edge tone is a Vox AC30. His guitar picks are cut/worn differently. There's a website all about U2 gear somewhere, you can probalby find it in a search on google. The delay often associated with him is a Memory Man Deluxe, but you could probalby fake it with a delay and a bit of chorus.

http://www.u2sound.de/

now you got an answer , but it isnt one .
his gear list is 10 miles long and changes constantly from album to album .
i guess the original u2 guitar sound was created by a stratocaster , roland jazzchorus and ams delays .

Why would you want to annoy people like that? One "Edge" is bad enough!

how can u set the delay time on the memory man deluxe exactly to dotted 1/8th note? it's an analog delay and it won't let you input the exact delay time.

I always thought it was a stereo delay with two different delay times: eg. left side quarter notes with only some feedback, right side dotted eights with more feedback. You would need a digital delay line with either msec or even better bpm settings. TC electronics springs to mind. Even Korg used to manufacture a stereo-delay that was perfect for this kind of applications. Maybe you find one on ebay, they are quite cheap these days.

Regards,

Dan

the TC 2290 and the korg sdd(1000+2000) units are the mainstays of the "modern" edge sound.
i think he did use a memory man in the "early years".
the tc unit was a HUGE part of the rig as it does loop switching as well. now he uses a bradshaw or similar switching system with several 2290 units several korg, as well as many others including <gasp> pod pro units.
the VOX is used for the signature tones, but there have always been additional amps used. Roland/randall/fender/hiwatt come to mind.

If you can, Check out Lexicons MPXG2. This unit is really good with recreating Edges' sound as well as others. I use it alot and edges' patch happens to be one of my favorite patches in the unit. Plus it's really easy to use.
