windows 7, vista or XP with PT9
Hi,
I'm looking to buy and install a nes computer and still don't know which operating system to use. My reflex is to go with vista or XP as these old systems are now working like tank and I'm afraid that I will encontered trouble with windows 7, particularly with PT9... Any advice or experience? Many thanks |

Re: windows 7, vista or XP with PT9
PT 9 "officially" only runs on Windows 7, so that pretty much limits your choice. And I would go with 64-bit even though PT 9 is only 32-bit, but it's only a matter of time before PT goes 64-bit...

Re: windows 7, vista or XP with PT9
PT9 will work on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. PT9 will work on x86 or x64 (32 bit and 64 bit).
Your device drivers MUST match your OS. Beyond that, it has been unofficially tested and confirmed. For reference, if you're looking to use 3gb of RAM or less, XP or Vista 32 bit will be fine. If you're looking to run 4gb of RAM or more, I strongly advise running Windows 7 x64. Windows XP x64 can get the job done, however in my personal experience, running both Windows XP x64 and Windows 7 x64, Windows 7 is much better at allocating resources and feels much faster on the same hardware, when you're running a high end machine. If you're running a somewhat older, and not as powerful machine, Windows 7 may feel sluggish depending on what type of work you're using the computer for. If you're intimidated by the different versions of Vista and Windows 7, going with the Home Premium version is good enough for just about everyone. I bought the student license of Windows 7 Home Premium x64 back when it first rolled out last winter, but didn't install it for several months. Much happier that I made the switch from Windows XP x64 though. I've run PT on both Mac and PC systems going back to v7.4, both 32 bit and 64 bit systems, and have rarely had major problems, although none of those problems really had to do with PT, mostly with driver conflicts. Going x64 is a great step, and sets you up for the future pretty well, but if you decide you're better off staying on 32 bit software, you aren't necessarily losing anything, it just means you'll have to upgrade your software again later.

Re: windows 7, vista or XP with PT9
I haven't had a whole lot of time to test it yet, being a full time student first.
So far the 2626 is doing quite well, and has given me no serious problems (just a problem when I lost power once). I don't have any ADAT units paired with it just yet, but that is a future goal for myself. Now PT9 is out, more inputs are available, and the 2626 can really be used to it's potential. From personal experience, and having PT M-Powered crash on me in the past, I would say don't limit yourself to using PT. Learn other software and keep it handy, you never know when something is going to crash on you (and that was with the desktop i have listed). I haven't had a chance to use the PF2626 in Windows 7 yet, that's something I'll be jumping into next week, but again, with PT9 and also other software (like Reaper).
