Need more DSP. Accel or used Process?
Hello All,
I'm been doing more straight mixing these days, and I'm running out of DSP more often than I do on tracks that I record. As more 96Khz projects come in, this will surely happen more often. I currently have one HD core card, and one Accel card. I updated all my plug's a few months back, but I'm noticing that a fair amount of my plugs are still not loading onto my accel card. I could either: buy a process card (lowest price on Ebay-around $750) or buy another Accel card (around $2500) If I went w/ the process, I could probably buy the card outright, whereas buying another accel card would mean extending my lease. Anyone else in the the same situation? thanks, Ken Sluiter |

Re: Need more DSP. Accel or used Process?
hi Ken,
If you're running 6.7, I'd suggest trying the beta mixer(s) located in the additonal files folder on the installer CD. These mixers are designed to increase the mixer's ability to shuffle OFF an Accel DSP when an Accel-only plug-in is needing that DSP. Please keep me (us) informed on any progress or lach thereof with these mixers. Thanks! -tv

Re: Need more DSP. Accel or used Process?
I'll try that beta mixer when I upgrade. However I think I'm gonna need more than just shuffling.
I mixed a record this fall where I had the producer bring his tower loaded w/ an Accel 3 system. Not having to worry about maximizing your DSP resources made mixing much, much easier and ,therefore, better. Once you have a taste of that type of power, it's hard to go back to just one accel card. I'm trying to commit myself to mixing entiely ITB, verbs and all. I really thought that an Accel 2 system would be enough, and it is for projects tracked w/ EQ and compression on each track. A lot a projects brought to me recently are recorded well, but very conseratively, w/ minimal EQ or compression. As a mixer , this gives me lots of options, but also requires a drastic amount of DSP to get the mix sounding like a proper record. My concern is that either: A) I buy a process card, and within a few months all my plug's migrate to accel and I wished I'd put that $$$ into an accel card. or B) I buy an accel card, and in a few months time, still have plugs not be accel compatible. |

Re: Need more DSP. Accel or used Process?
If financially strapped (Christmas etc.) I would buy the process card and see how it does as far as processing power goes. If it totally sucked, I would then sell it on ebay and buy the accel card when I had more money.
