Well, that's cool and all, but I want something now that I can use at school. What's the best PC laptop I can get now that will run PT? $1000-$1500 budget.

I'm considering a laptop that would be "more or less" (depending on specs) dedicated to Pro Tools and other music software. The two models I'm considering are the following:

- MacBook - 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM, 120GB Serial ATA @ 5400 rpm - price about $1,360

- Dell Latitude 830 - 2.0 GHz Intel® Core 2 Duo T7300 4M L2 Cache, 800Mhz Dual Core, Windows® XP Professional SP2 with media, 2.0GB, DDR2-667 SDRAM, 2 DIMMS, 120GB Hard Drive, 9.5MM, 7200RPM - price about $1,275

Thoughts on how these 2 would compare running PT LE? Any other models I should consider at around this price point? Given that I've been using Windows for years, I'll face some learning curve on the Mac, but I also feel like I'd have a better chance of keeping Mac "dedicated" to PT, since I just have a lot less software I'd be tempted to load up on it.

With all this Mac talk I had to check which forum I was in.

Is anyone using a PC laptop with Windows on it anymore?

I think I'm going for a laptop soon. But there ain't no way I'm spending 3 grand on a Macbook. I will probably get an AMD based PC laptop. I'm not sure which model now because this thread has gone Mac on me.

I'm not looking for processing power for multi tracking and mixing. All I want is something to run an M-box for mobile 2 tracking. I would do all my editing and mixing at home on my 002R system.

People where going for the E-Machines a while back are they still viable?

Why would you need to spend 3 grand on a Macbook? I'm hoping the one speced above will be sufficient at under $1,500.

You might want to do a search on "Turion" before you by that PC notebook, nothing but problems there - Which I might add are currently insurmountable.

I researched notebooks for PT for a solid year, If you want a notebook that actually works with Protool's........buy one thats not a PC

Thats what I did.

Hi All,

I've read page after page of this forum and am picking up some really key information that is helpful, but several allusions to things that I need some more info on.

I bought the dreaded DELL about a month ago and am having difficulty running PT 6.4cs9 with OO2 Factory. It's an Inspiron 9400 with Core Duo (1.86 ghz) and 2G of RAM. The built in firewire 4-pin works, but with lots of buffer issues. I bought an express card 2-port firewire bus with hopes that it would fix the problem but can't get it to find the 002.

All of these things have been touched on in here, but I'm looking for some definitive answers:

1) Is it a BRAND issue with my firewire express card?
2) Or will 002 just not work with firewire express cards?

I've used an emachines 6805 run under "standard PC" (dual boot, 2 versions of xp home) very successfully, lot's of live recording, 14-16 tracks simultaneously. If you can find one (or a 6807, 6809,6811) I'd go with it. There's one on ebay right now, about 25 minutes left, $250.
