Default Dell M90 Laptop Firewire slot compatibility for 003

I made the mistake of purchasing a Dell M90 Laptop 4 months for my main business without checking compatibility for the 003 Factory. My plan was to use it with 003 as well. I just received my 003 Factory as a trade in from my 001. I was suprised to read the 003 firewire interface doesn't work with the internal firewire controller on the M90. Yikes!! I spoke with Digi tech support and they are still not sure if the problem can be resolved. Does anyone know if there is a firewire express card that I can plug into the available express card slot on the M90 that will work with 003? Dell shows 2 models on their website, a Belkin and a SIIG. Both are 2 port, 6 pin, 400Mbs transfer rate which will plug into the M90, but these aren't available yet in the local stores, so I don't want to order it online only to send it back because they aren't compatible with the 003. I sure hope something is available. Thanks.

I don't know if this helps at all, but I'm having a similar issue with my Dell Inspiron 9400. I bought this one because it was on the Digi list as being a laptop that was supported. I've got a 002 which works with the mini 4-pin firewire slot, but I'm having ridiculous buffer problems. I've got 2G of RAM and running the dual core 1.86 processors. Same as you, I thought it might be a bottleneck at the firewire port, so I bought an express card with dual firewire 6-pin slots. I'm sorry to say that so far I can't get PT to recognize the 002. Last night's session was my first failed attempt...that is why I'm on this now looking for help.

If I get it to work I'll try to let you know, but at this point, I don't know that ordering the exprss card is going to do you any good at all.

Thanks for the input. I've ordered a Belkin Express card with Dual 6 pin firewire ports. I figured I'd try it and then approach Digi again with a specific error code and try and get some guidance. They say the problem originates from the firewire controller on the M90. I will also be willing to have Dell (if it's an option) replace the firewire controller with a compatible one. If these steps don't work I'm not sure what my options will be. I certainly don't need another laptop, especially a mac since the other business apps I use the Dell for are all PC. I don't want to buy a dedicated desktop because I'll be mobile with the 003 factory as we build the musical project with a variety of musicians. I'll post any results/failures/progress as it happens.

Go over this and see if there's anything relevant....

I also just posted this recently

Another funny thing is that if you look at Digidesign's recommended Laptops, the Dell M90 + M65 used to be recommended, but now they are listed as incompatible. I remember Digidesign even did a 'Mobile Production System' tour paradeing the M65 + M90 I believe as their flagship compatible laptops.

I'll check in and see if you have any questions.
