Default 2020.3 on Mac Pro 5.1, High Sierra?

Hi,

Right now i am on 2019.5 with Sierra with my 5.1 Mac Pro.
I tried to do a clean install of High Sierra on another drive to install 2020.3.
I was prompt with a message telling me that i have to update the Mac Pro firmware in order to install High Sierra. I followed the instructions but the firmware did not seem to be upgraded. After trying to update it two times, i gave up and installed Sierra in order to play with Folder tracks.🙂

Now, before installing gazzilions of plugins, anyone have a clue on how can i upgrade the firmware to install High Sierra?

Or should i just go with Sierra and install everything.

I am on HDX, video card is ATI 5770 ( i read somewhere that you need this card to update firmware on the Mac Pro)

Thanks!

try reading this:
http://dosdude1.com/highsierra/

it allows you to download a full High Sierra installer directly from Apple and build a bootable USB installer which can be used to install on machines that even Apple do not support directly.

High Sierra firmware update is about NVMe support and what I hear (no first hand experience as my MP is a trashcan) support for NVMe is much better in Mojave. If you have Metal compatible GPU I would try Mojave instead, and if you don't I would upgrade it anyway

Wow, thanks guys, lots of info, that was a good read.

So for now, in these times of coronavirus when everything is closed, I bet the safe path for me is to try 2020.3 with Sierra. And if it's buggy, then I can use my 2019.5 drive.

I'll wait a bit before upgrading my GPU, just in case that something would go wrong. I would be stuck!

Thanks to all for the replies.

How would GPU upgrade be a problem? If it doesn't work you can always switch the old GPU back...

Yes.
It's the firmware upgrade thing.
I tried two times yesterday without luck.
Dont want to break anything right now.

Sure, but firmware update is not necessary for GPU upgrade so you can just as well prepare your cheesegrater for later. Or just stay put, nothing wrong in that

It's just that when I try to install High Sierra on my 5.1 Mac Pro, with the current 5770 card, High Sierra ask me to upgrade the firmware and it's not working.

Are you saying that with a new GPU card, High Sierra would not ask that?

Thanks
