Default Importing Video from Avid

Some people are asking me to do audio work on a short video they're working on in Avid Xpress DV 3.5.
I need to record a narrator and some music.
How do I edit sound for video in Pro Tools?
I tried to import an AVI file and MPEG and it said it would only read Quicktime file.
Does that make any sense?
How can I open the video file they save on another machine, or any video file, in Pro Tools for editing?

Thanks.

GtrDude.
