Re: Enuff Q: How about some tips!!!!
Here's one I sometimes use for sorting out an overly dynamic kick (or snare) drum performance:
(a bit obvious maybe) if the quieter kicks still sound good enough to use... 1 - alt shift D to duplicate the kick track (keep the original) on the new track: 2 - use strip silence (command u) or beat detective (command 8) to seperate all the kiks 3 - audiosuite normalize all the kicks at once (set to region by region) 4 - batch fade in and out (keep 'em shorter than strip silence's start buffer thingy) 5 - now you can blend this track with the original to balance the dynamics of the kik. This is A LOT better than soundreplacing less than 100%, cause there's no possiblity of phasing or misaligned trigger points. Also, you can show the drummer it is still HIM playing it. well kinda... is it ever? Alwyn Komodo Studios Northern Ireland Protools HDcore G4 dual 1GHz (soon to G5 ) |

Re: Fixing an overly dynamic Kick or Snare track
Hey, thanks for laying it out in simple steps.
I'm gonna try this on my next session. I usually don't completely trust computers to do my janitorial work, but damn I'm tired of making the drummer sound good when I could be watching re-runs of Family Guy!

First time I've ever heard of a good use for Normalize. Whodathunk? Good work.

Re: Enuff Q: How about some tips!!!!
I imagine this would have a similar effect to parallel compressing the kick? A lot easier on people's cpu resources though, I suppose!

Re: Fixing an overly dynamic Kick or Snare track
Other options;
Insert Waves L1(or similar) limiter to push the louder hits down(so you can bring the overall track up) Use a drum replacement plugin(Drumagog or similar) and replace with a sample and set a limited dynamic range(you could even use the original drum as the replacement sample by grabbing a single shot)

Re: Fixing an overly dynamic Kick or Snare track
Have you tried Parallel compressing the kick? Or even separating where the kick does not hit has hard and just use a meter to clip gain each kick to the correct level.

Re: Fixing an overly dynamic Kick or Snare track
I would put a "balancing" compressor as the first effect. This would have the attack set to -10ms (pre-attack 10 ms), release the longest possible, keeping the whole hit sound compressed, but being released right before the next hit. Threshold set right above the quietest hit, ratio depending on the aimed dynamic differences between hits.
What these settings do is they leave quiete hits as they are and when the louder hit comes, it get pushed down for the whole duration of the hit with no compressing artifacts. |
