Operating system
So OS X is UNIX based, does that mean that OS X compatible PT might also be compatible with other colors of UNIX. Linux too, perhaps? I read today that Pixar and Dreamworks have both ported their software to Linux.

Re: Operating system
Basically you can run UNIX apps in OSX. That includes programs like xFree86, Xwindows, and other window managers. Then programs like GIMP which is a pretty amazing photoshop-like program which is open source (=free).
BUT that doesn't mean you can run OSX apps in UNIX. Apps for the mac are written in Cocoa or Carbon using apple APIs. That said one of the promises of coca and objective-c is the ability to "code once compile for everywhere". We'll see about that, but at any rate considering the proprietary hardware that digidesign sells, I doubt you will see anything from them that works on anything other than Mac or Windows platforms. |
