Why unified AAX plugin folder?
Hi,
I'm slightly confused as to why there's only one folder fr all AAX plugins. AFAIU the 32 and 64 bit plugins are mutually incompatible, the 32-bit plugs only work with PT10 and the 64-bit only work with PT11. PT11 even asked me to move the 32-bit plugs to the "unused plugins" folder. I just don't get it. Any thoughts? |

Re: Why unified AAX plugin folder?
The unified folder will keep things simple for users. Users won't have to be told that a Pro Tools 10/AAX32/AAX1 plug-in goes in one location while a Pro Tools 11/AAX64/AAX2 plug-in goes somewhere else.
v10.3.6 and v11 should automagically determine which plug-ins can be loaded. Maybe the plug-ins you were prompted to move were made with an older SDK?

Re: Why unified AAX plugin folder?
And if you think it through to the logical conclusion, both 10 and 11 are loading the exact same plugin file. That means AAX2 can be both 32 and 64 bit.

Re: Why unified AAX plugin folder?
Hi Jonathan,
Thanks for getting back. What's SDK short for? Clean install, new system drive, new HDX hardware, no AAX plugins installed more than 10 days ago. PT11 moved all my 32-bit plugins to the unused plugins folder. Of course I put them back afterwards. That doesn't really make things simpler or easier from my perspective. Guessing by your answer the SDK variable (whatever it is) seems to add a bit to the confusion. I welcome having native and DSP plugins residing together. but I still fail to see what point the mélange of incompatible 32-and 64-bit plugins make. Having two plugins of each residing in the same folder won't necessarily make me less confused. That's what's going down in the imminent future right? Best /Erik |

Re: Why unified AAX plugin folder?
On windows thete are 2 folders located
Program files/common files/avid/audio/plugins PT 11 And Program files(x86)/common files/avid/audio/plugins And the folder for rtas plugins are still in the same location under program files(x86)/common files/digidesign/pro tools/plugins ( I think... can't remember the locations) Both are for PT 10

Software Development Kit. This contains all of the APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) that the developers have to use in order to create a functional plug-in.
The SDK for AAX probably changed with the release of v11. Some companies will certainly update their plug-ins for v11, and I would expected those updates to be a universal plug-in (32-bit and 64-bit) if they already had released an AAX plug-in prior to June 2013.

Re: Why unified AAX plugin folder?
Ok,
so you can make a unified 32-and 64 bit plugin? Sounds good. I guess we may have to wait a bit for those though, it seems Avid has bugs and issues on the higher sample rates (96 and 192). I saw that Celemony can't release their Melodyne 64-bit plugin because of this. Avid are aware of these issues though. Having PT11 move all 32-bit plugins away seems weird though. Don't you think? Re: Why unified AAX plugin folder?
On the PC, as mentioned, there are separate folders for Pro tools10 and pro tools 11. AAX and RTAS for 10 and just the new AAX folder for 11. Are you saying on the Mac it's all one folder? And did you have 10.3.6 installed before. You installed 11? Just curious.

So the question for you on Windows is whether or not 10.3.6 shares AAX2 usage from the same folder as 11. You can test this by moving plugins to the unused folder to see what happens.
