converting old pro tools 5.1 sessions into pro tools 7
i know the answer lurks here somewhere (and i'm pretty sure the answer is "sorry, you're S.O.L.") but i couldn't find it.
i have a bunch of old pro tools sessions from a long-gone G4 mac that ran OS9. these are pro tools 5.1 sessions. my current version of pro tools is 7.1, and my current mac G5 runs 10.4.11. when i try to open the older pro tools sessions (that were created in os9 on the old G4), it says "the document could not be opened because it was created with an older version of pro tools". creating a new sessions and attempting to import the old session data gets me the same announcement. there's nothing i can do, right? other than find someone running an old os9 machine? |

Re: converting old pro tools 5.1 sessions into pro tools 7
a) you need to append the correct extension to the 5.1 sessions, I sure what was what but I think 5.1 was .pts
b) wrong section to post this question in

Re: converting old pro tools 5.1 sessions into pro tools 7
assuming your on a Mac LE for Mac http://duc.avid.com/forumdisplay.php?f=15
try making a test session in 7.1, then do a Save Copy in to 5.1 and see what extension it uses

hi craig f -
sorry for the delay, we got a bit hurricaned last week. no, not an LE. it's actually a G5 with ProTools HD. i've done what you suggested, and the extension the test session used was .pdf alas, the 5.1 session still won't open, even with that extension appended to its name. really appreciate any other suggestions you (or anyone else) might have for me......? thanks |

I don't know if you've tried this, but have a go at opening it via the File>Open command, instead of double clicking on the file itself. It used to work for me on the odd occasion.
5.1 extension is .pts BTW. It sounds like the session file may have had the resource fork stripped off it.

Yep, I just opened up a session from 11th December 2002 without any problems except the obvious ones - all the SDII files needed to be converted, a couple of missing plug-ins. , etc.

Re: converting old pro tools 5.1 sessions into pro tools 7
hi guys -
first off, i really REALLY appreciate the replies. bobbydazzler: i'm a dolt - f course the 5.1 extension isn't .pdf it is, as you say, .pts i tried amending the session with that extension (as well as .ptf and a few others), to no avail. i also tried opening from the "open session" command. no dice. midnightrambler: that is awesome for you. you are lucky! (and/or not a dolt). i wish mine did. i've heard the term "resource fork" bandied about many times over the years. i should know what it means, but i don't. i see reports of damaged ones in occasional diskwarrior/norton/etc reports. without getting to heavily into definitions, is there something i CAN do about it if this particular sessions resource fork is missing? my guess is that i can't open it because this session was originally created and finished on an older computer of mine (G4) on OS9. this is a G5 on OSX. at this point, i'd be happy just to get the midi info out of there. thanks again, guys. |

Perhaps try this TypeShuffler to fix resource fork issues.
