Default Re: E.T.A On P.T 9 64bit?

Am I missing something as PT 9 system requirement says:

Snow Leopard: Mac OS X 10.6.2, 10.6.3, 10.6.4, or 10.6.5 (32 or 64-bit)

OS X 10.6.x is always 64-bit, while it's kernel (+ drivers) can still be run in either 32- or 64-bit mode (depending on the hw). So does the spec above mean that now we can at least finally switch to 64-bit kernel? I remember reading from somewhere that on 10.6.x PT 8.x only supported running 32-bit kernel...

(Btw, it says on that page that "4GB or more" memory is recommended. Is this info misleading or what?)

It only means that depending how many tracks, effect, vi and all. You may need more Ram as some VI host manage ram independently than PT does.

It may be so but as far as I know PT app does not include any VI's in itself (they are separate apps/plugins). I read this statement as concerning PT alone (and all what's included in it, like it's built-in RTAS plugins) as nothing there says anything about VI's or anything extra.

So then what are DB-33, BOOM, Grand Piano, and Xpand?

RTAS. And with them included in PT, "4GB or more" memory is recommended... . That would let reader understand the PT app is capable of addressing more than 4GB. Maybe that's not what they ment but that what it says.

I think the reader is reading what isn't said.

4GB or more is a system recommendation. It doesn't say anything about 64 bit or that PT is capable of using more than 4GB. However, having more than 4GB of RAM is beneficial even for a 32-bit app, especially in a 64-bit operating system. If you have 6 or 8GB... Pro Tools can cram up all 4GB it can use, while there is still room to breathe for the OS, and apps running outside of Pro Tools, which leads to a smoother running system overall.

Hence... 4GB or more is recommended.

In itself PT can access nearly 4 Gb of memory. Therefore having more than 4 GB of memory in a 64 bit environment leaves memory for the OS and other apps as well. And PT certainly comes with V.I.'s like Dism mentioned.

Dang ya beat me to it, and even better

In fact it does:
http://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/self...p?DocId=380535

Snow Leopard: Mac OS X 10.6.2, 10.6.3, 10.6.4, or 10.6.5 (32 or 64-bit)
2GB minimum, 4GB or more recommended

And, due to the statement, the second part of my original question was that can we now swicth to 64-bit kernel with PT9?

Sure, as in it's included RTAS plugins but any VI's capable of addressing beyond PT memory limits, as referred in earlier post, will need another runtime external to PT RTAS engine to be able to do so.

I will not arque against PT 9 being 32-bit and supporting only 4GB, but the specs on site aren't clear on this and are even misleading to me (maybe so in purpose...)
