Default The new "Pro Tools" (regular) and 3rd party interfaces

A coworker uses PT12 vanilla with a 3rd party interface. I see that PT Ultimate charges $299/year for the DigiLink I|O which allows you to use those 3rd party interfaces.

The literature on Avid's site doesn't mention 3rd party interfaces at all. Does the plain Jane version of PT no longer allow 3rd party interfaces? If they do, what are they charging?

You are misunderstanding some of this. The Digilink license is $299(a one-time purchase) and it is specifically for using digilink-equipped interfaces(like 192, OMNI or HD IO boxes) and would be required if you use an HD/Native card or HDX card(s). Both "vanilla" and Ultimate(formerly HD) still work with most any 3rd party hardware(but I believe you will still be limited to 32 ins and outs)

right.
you don't need a Digilink license for Pro Tools and a USB or Firewire interface
