Default 8-track Digi 002 Rack recording with an iBook?

Hi, I've got a pretty specific question:

Does anyone know what sort of performance I can expect from a 60Gb, 1G RAM G4 iBook (1.33Ghz processor) when recording using a DIGI 002 Rack and external hard drive? I haven't actually bought the laptop yet so I'm wondering if anyone can reccommend / warn me off it.

The iBook in question is on digidesign's list of compatible computers, but I'm wondering if I'll run into trouble in trying to use all 8 rack inputs to record a drum kit for instance?

The iBook info is here for anyone kind enough to check it out:
http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObje...2.0.11.1.0.6.3

Apple do have a 14 day returns policy so I guess one option is just to buy the thing and try it.

any help greatly appreciated

Badkop

Your iBook will work fine. Buy an external Firewire drive to be sure.

I recorded 16 tracks ( 8 into 002, 8 adat in from ADA8000) + one midi track on a 900Mhz iBook, will a paltry 384 Mb of ram, and one external firwire drive. Had to round robin track allocation - 6 to the internal, and 10 on the fw drive. Even ran a few digirack compressors.
Mind you, I had smoke coming out of it at the end, but it did the trick, and we got the gig.

Just curious...

What sort of track (presumably 32) and plug-in count can you pull out of your iBook?

('Bout to exchange to a Digi002 for my iBook 1.33Ghz)

yeah, like tha k man said, you should be fine. I recorded a live set for about 2 hours with 8 channels and an 800mHz Book G4. I recorded to an external FW drive, and there was only one hiccup the entire time, but that was probably due to the 800mhz G4 and the 384 MB of RAM... Also, the power was cut about halfway through, one of the hydrogen fuel cells running the PA/Recording setup stopped outputting power, but it was a quick fix (although not something i imagine will be any problem to anyone).

I'm running the same setup except I have only 512 ram. Tracking is no problem. I can track 16 tracks at 24/96 with no problems. I am using a Lacie D2 external hard drive which is what I recomend over any other. I did a mix of a 22 track song transfered from tape, 1 mix was at 24/96 and I had a hard time putting more than 5 plug-ins and 1 reverb on it. When mixing the same song at 24/48 it ran a lot smoother with out any difference in sound. 1 Gig of ram should help you out some, but the main problem here is the single processor and it being an Ibook. I would spend the extra dough to get and power book. A power book can run a 24 track Pro Tools HD system so.....it's prob worth it.

Forgive my ignorance, but how are you tracking 16 tracks at 24/96?
The best I can do is 18 @ 24/48, or 10 @ 24/96.

The ADAT optical is limited to 8 channels of 24/48.
