Default Quantizing Metal Drums

Is there anyone out there who has any tips for quantizing fast metal drums with lots of double kick. I have been using beat detective, but it has not come out sounding that great. I have also tried some other manual methods with mixed results as well. Any tips would be appreciated.

Depends how good the drummer is and how close they are to begin with. Also, are there measures of 3 thrown in there? Metal drummers love to do that, Beat Detective hates it. First, go through and manually cut things in chunks and move sections so that downbeats are where they should be, this will make things easier for BD. Most drummers play in front, so make it so that most hits are now on the downbeat and it'll save a lot of time later. Then just go in 4 bar sections getting BD to do what it can and do the fills/tough parts by hand. It's work, that's why they call it work.

Even if the whole song is in 4/4, if the drummer shifts the subdivision from, say, 32nd notes to 16th-note-triplets, Beat Detective will freak out, unless you inform BD of this new subdivision. FWIW, drummers tend to shift subdivision when they go for a big fill, or in the middle of a fill. Watch out for triplets played between the tom and the two bass drums, these can look like uneven 16ths if you're just looking at the kick tracks.

Must the whole song be quantized? This is usually rare. Maybe there are only a few sections that need tweaking.

We just used the 7.4 elastic / rhythmic and it works great. Double beater single kick drum, 4 tom, 2 floors, 5 cymbals & hats.
In EA Quantizing to a lesser value will bring sections in the work on a as needed basis from there. If the Q doesn't work in a section just start removing or moving the warp markers until it pocket is locked.

Note: we keep the EA live then below the kit tracks we duplicated the track layout (No Audio and no EA) then we option-drag from the EA grouped tracks to copy to the non EA'd tracks thus committing as the tracks copy.
make inactive the EA tracks and hide until we need to make a change.

EA seems work not good on Cymbals, polyphonic mode will make things a little better, but it always damage the transients of cymbals

do you have any solution?

Also never group all the drums together. Always have the bass drum/drums on one group and snare/OH/AMB on another group. Quantize bass drum first, than the rest of the kit.

And beware of those triplet parts as mentioned before. Sometimes it's only a few bass drum hits within a 4/4 part, there's in triplets. Especially in progressive inspired metal music like e.g. Metalcore bands. Beat D. will screw those parts up if you're not aware of this - that goes for toms as well.

agreed w/ the quantize the kick drum separately, make sure when you track you have some sort of isolation for the kick, like a kick drum tunnel. (two music stands and a few moving blankets can work), so you don't have the bleed from the rest of the kit as much in the kick mic's. you want to keep it as isolated as possible if your going to move the kick separate from the rest of the kit.

fyi, you can't move the snare separate from the rest of the kit, its sound comes from the overhead/room mics as much as it does from the close mic's

if they are doing a lot of double kick, sometimes you may want to fly single hits of the kick drum into spots where the drummer gets close to flamming on the kick to avoid having to make as drastic sounding edits.

sometimes you'll just want to tab to transient and handle every hit manually, especially during blast beats/ fast double bass etc.
