Question Partioned Mac System HD ?

Hi,

I'm asking for a friend who doesn't speak english:

He installed OSX10.6 on a 1 TB-HD .... but he partitioned it to two 500 Gig partitions.

He want's to use one 500 MB partition for Mac-OS and of course all his apps and Plugs etc. pp.
The 2nd 500 MB partition he wants to use for backup purposes.
He's running PT-HD8.1.

Of course he uses an extra HD for his audio files and another one for his SoundLibraries.

Question: Is it okay to use 2 partitions on a system drive ?

I have something in mind that one shouldn't do so if running PT-HD .... but I'm not sure if this is correct

Thx in advance

Absolutely fine. I have my system drive partitioned without any issues.

It will work BUT keep in mind that a backup drive is intended to BACKUP a failed drive, so if something were to happen to your system drive, your backup would be gone too. You're friend may want to consider a separate physical drive. Something about putting your eggs in the same basket.

No, it is not "okay" -- it is RECOMMENDED !!! :)

The storage partition can even be a "TimeMachine" partition, just do not set the time machine to backup anything automatically as it might affect performance. But non-scheduled backups (as in "backup now" when it is convenient) are okay.

I would do the 2 drive backup.
Partitions are fine.
(2 1GB drives ((4 partitions))
Drive #1 OS and file partitions (Scratch or library)
Drive #2 OS BU and file partition (Scratch or library)
Keep the OS drive at about 30% filled.

My POV.

By who? Avid or you?

While disk partions were way to go 15 years ago, they are not really necessary today.

Are the hard drives not round and spinning anymore?

No, SSD drives are not round and they don't spin. Thank you for asking.
