Default Playback, the video is dragging and mac's fan is agressive with video

Hi, sorry for the title, didn't know how to explain it in a short sentence.

I'm having big playback issues. I work in post-production and I can't synch anything at all because the video keeps dragging and lagging. I have tried to see if it happens with any other software and it doesn't (Logic, iMovie, etc), only with pro tools. I have already updated to the newest pro tools version, the newest Mac OSX (10.14.6) and the drivers for my audio interface Scarlett 18i20.

When I want to watch the video or synch sound it starts dragging and the computer's fan (i think) starts aggressively blowing with the loudest sound ever. When I stop the playback it cools down and makes no noise.

I've been at this for days and might lose a client because of this whole problem so I would be very thankful for some insight.

These are my specs:
Pro Tools Version 2019.6
Hardware Scarlett 18i20
iMac (Retina 4K 21.5-inch, Late 2015)
Processor 3,3 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 16 GB 1867 MHz DDR3
OSX: Mojave 10.14.6

Processor is thermalling hence the fan going nuts as well as the video drag. Also 10.4.6 is NOT supported yet by Avid.

"macOS 10.12.6, 10.13.6, 10.14.4 or 10.14.5"

Hi! Thank you for answering. I forgot to mention that this started before I updated both pro tools and the osx.

Problem about the 10.4.6 version is that I was still with the 10.12 and wanted to update to 10.14.4, which pro tools mentioned was compatible, but I had to first update to the 10.14 in general and since I did it through the apple store, it updated automatically to the most recent version. And apparently (though I have to research this more), you can't install lower versions because this specific mojave osx does not allow it -.- so the problem that I have was already from before the update and updating did nothing to help.

Trash prefs. Remove all plugins. They can be a culprit. ( i recently had an video issue with Youlean loudness meter - great plug by great dev, just sometimes buggy, but always promptly fixed) Check again. Gradually add plugins. Rinse and repeat.

Also, is video in one of supported codecs (dnxhd, dnxhr)? H264 embedded within mp4 WILL cause problems.

The latest mojave should be ok. People ok’d it here...

I've trashed the preferences, but did not clear plugins, so I'll try to do that.
The video for this particular session is indeed h264, so I'll try to convert to one of those you mentioned, thanks!
