The last answer is because making a partition of the system drive actually stresses it MORE than simply recording to the system drive(C:). Either way, the head stack(the "pickup" that writes and retrieves data) now has to do twice the work(do all the mundane system stuff), AND do all the recording/playback audio stuff. That's a ()*&^load of work for any single hard drive.
Misunderstanding! I mean: "why not a 2.5" 5400 rpm as separate, external FW drive" in oposition to "it must be one external 7200 rpm drvie for autio recording".

Because 5400rpm drives spin too slowly to stream audio properly.

When Avid sells a FW400 Interface like MBOX Por or Digi003 and says "you must use FW drive on Mac" then makes a fast 3.5" hard disk with 7200 on MacBook no sence at all because almost each modern 3.5"/7200 is faster even than FW800 - not to mention FW400, but you must use FW400 mode with your drive due to FW400 nature of audio interface. So I ask again - why 7200 HDD as external FW drive for tracking?

What means "not properly"? No properly for home projects on mbox with handfull tracks on MacBook? 10 tracks? 20 tracks? That is probably not serious. Hard disc recording is older than todays +100 MB/s 7200 drives. When this was possible 10 years ago, than this must be possible today with acurrent fast 2.5" 5400 drives.
