Default Issues running PT 12.x and 2018 on Late 2012 i7 iMac 27" 3.4Ghz 32GB Ram

Hi Guys,

I'm just about to purchase a late 27" 2012 3.4Ghz i7 with 32GB ram to run Pro Tools 12.x and 2018.

I wanted to know if they have any inherent faults particularly heating when used intensively (like the 2011 to early 2013 Macbook Pros, one of which I own and had the GPU overheating failure).

I've done some research and found out some people having some issues with their 27" iMacs overheating with their usage (not necessarily with Pro Tools or DAWs).

Has anyone here having any issues that may be inherent to Apple's aesthetic design?

Much Thanks in advance

I have one in an edit suite, running PT10 with Mountain Lion, hooked up to two monitors and a 6T firewire 800 drive . running every day for years.....not a single heating issue.....runs perfect.......hopefully PT12/18 will work the same when i change over, once theres a break in the schedule intensity...sometime next year hahah

Hi capt kirk,

Much appreciated for the feedback!

I believe Avid changed the graphics resolution of PT from version 11, I think this is why PT sends the fans wild on my Late 2011 MBP (but with Logic Pro X it is silents as a whisper).

I wish I could wait until next year when you change over to PT 12 to get your feedback on that experience.....lol

Out of curiosity, how do you connect your firewire HD to your iMac as the model I'm looking at only has USB 3 & thunderbolt?

Much Thanks

2015 i5 iMac with 32gb ram runs all day every day with PT 2018.1, never had any issues with heat - JUST laggy graphics on the 5k iMac monitor

I know you didn't ask and in the hopes you haven't purchased that iMac - make sure it doesn't have a Fusion drive for the system drive. Those historically are death to good working with PT.

Hi musicman691,

It does have one unfortunately, why so?

I can boot and run it from my G-Tech external via usb3, but as you say the fusion drive is the death of running PT reliably I would have to have the drive replaced with my Samsung Evo Pro.

Much thanks

Fusion drives move data at will between the ssd portion and spinner portion which isn't good for audio work. I'd take the time & effort to split that case open and swap out the Fusion drive for an ssd. You'll be glad you did. And if you want to do it yourself OWC has kits to do the job.

As all my audio gets recorded to a separate external drive, is the fusion drive not suitable for running the app & VIs/samples?

Thanks

In a word - YES.
Keep in mind that a lot of people put their sample libraries (not the sampler program itself like Kontakt) on separate drives from the system drive. You can never have too much space for sample libraries - ask anyone here how they know that one
