Re: Should I Stay Or Should I Go (from 12.7.1 to 12.8)?
@LesPaul2550
Corrupted .wav files sound like a hardware issue, not a PT issue. Clone your system to a new hard drive, and run off of that for a week to see if the problem returns. |

Re: Should I Stay Or Should I Go (from 12.7.1 to 12.8)?
I just feel were paying to be Beta testers! I've been a user since the mid-90's and it was never anything like this bad back then, It's become out of control... at our expense. Just saying.

Re: Should I Stay Or Should I Go (from 12.7.1 to 12.8)?
I was having TONS of problems with 12.7.1 so just upgraded to 12.8 (on a cloned drive) and it is a million times more stable for me.
I was getting, honestly, between 25 and 50 crashes per day on 12.7.1. Today I only had 1. So for me, it's WAAAAAY more stable. I'm running HD on Sierra on a Mac Pro (trash cran). [Editorial Aside: I get that it's a mix of plugins, hardware, video, etc... that is causing tons of crashes for me. But when I use the very same plugins on another DAW everything is stable. It's very frustrating that the Pro Tools ecosystem is so much less stable than all the others and we have to hold our breath with each update and hope that there are fewer bugs. It's not crazy to expect practically no bugs. We pay (especially us HD users) a lot of money to use pro tools and just saying "disable all your third-party plugins and it'll run smoothly" is not a answer to this problem. Once work slows down I'm going to try to pick up Logic for my composition work (already using Ableton a bit too) but will obviously need to keep using PTHD for film post (sound editing and mixing). Anyway, I know posts like these aren't really that helpful but scoring a feature and have lost so much time do to Pro Tools crashing and freezing and can't complain to the client (makes me look unprofessional) so I guess I'm just venting here... ] |

Re: Should I Stay Or Should I Go (from 12.7.1 to 12.8)?
On my system at work (Windows 7 Enterprise) 12.8 is handling video better, same sessions, same video, better performance less video engine complaining. Using .mov with DNxHD codecs.

Re: Should I Stay Or Should I Go (from 12.7.1 to 12.8)?
The Pascal graphics chip in the latest Nvidia series 1070, 1080 can be modified for Mac support. You can look on the macvidcards.com site for some prices.
The GTX Titan X is a 12GB graphics card, but actually a prior generation "Maxwell" series. The "Pascal" series uses less power. Assuming you flash the rom so you get full Mac compatibility, you will still need an external power supply or a kluge of a second power supply squished into the CD ROM bay. By old timers, I meant people who had resurrected the MP 4,1 with the 5,1 firmware so they could run Sierra. Never bought a MP 1,1, but I still have a Power PC G5. The issue stems from Apple introducing new computers that will not run old operating systems. Which means if you want to keep running PT 10 or PT 11, you need an "old time" computer that will run Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite. The latest generation of MacBook Pros only run Sierra, so if you want to run Pro Tools on them, you have to be running PT 12.6 or higher. Just throwing stuff out there, and commenting that, if you are at 12.7.1, 12.8 has a slough of bug fixes...so why not go for it?

If you have 12.7.1 running nicely - stay. If you are in trouble with that version - go for 12.8 - you have nothing to loose

Re: Should I Stay Or Should I Go (from 12.7.1 to 12.8)?
I'll add to the chorus of "me too's"...
12.8 has been a winner for me. No errors or other oddities, but I've also paired down my plugins since getting a Console 1, and that may have something to do with it. I'm only using Softube, Soundtoys, Izotope (as AudioSuite's for Post), Valhalla and NI stuff. Trust me, I had a lot more. I found I wasn't using my Waves and Slate stuff as much as I thought I would. It really does seem to make a difference after thinning the plugin heard tg
