Default Main Volume Level

With the 002.

When monitoring, about where exactly does everyone have to turn up thier main volume knob. 1/4 of the way, 1/2 way, 3/4 or practically all the way up. I found the monitoring level to be pretty low. Meaning I am cranking the volume just to get it loud enough to mix it well. Is there another gain stage I can adjust before mixing? I am using Alesis MKII's and a 002.
