Why are my midi notes so small?
Since moving from 6.9 to 7.3 I've noticed that both the midi notes and the piano roll are sooo tiny(I mean really tiny) when I've got the midi track set to medium size...but when I switch to regions view the notes are regular size....or what appears to be regular(to me anyway). The only way I can get the midi notes to a workable size is to blow the midi track up to extremely large or fit to screen. A real pain when editing midi.
So I went to the manual to see if there is a separate sizing setting for the piano roll in notes view but I can't find any...so now I'm wondering if it's some sort of bug or system anomaly with 7.3. I never had to do this in 6.4...and I did a lot of midi editing there so I would know! Is there a way to make the piano roll grid larger independant of the track size?

You know you can zoom in and out of the MIDI notes right? Making them as big or small as you want.

Yeah, I know that....but I don't want to have to zoom in 5 zoom settings to repair or edit a note that sounds wrong. Why is the piano roll in notes not relative to the one in regions is what I want to know.

Re: Why are my midi notes so small?
The region view will always try to show you all the notes, in order to give you a snapshot overview of the whole performance/region. If your region only uses a small range of notes, they'll appear larger, but if you have something that covers multiple octaves it'll appear tiny - it auto-sizes itself. You'll notice if you try and MIDI zoom in Region view it does nothing.
The piano roll/note view is independent of the region view, which is a good thing really, just inconvenient for your current song.. The thing that bugs me about viewing MIDI is that the MIDI note zoom is independent across multiple tracks, so in note view you can have one track with large notes and another with tiny notes - that bugs the carp out of me as it means constant in/out zooming depending on which track you're trying to edit. It also doesn't keep the current notes centered when you do a zoom, which is also incredibly frustrating. I guess the answer is, MIDI editing in PT still isn't really up to snuff. Just get used to it and maybe Digi will get it right one of these days. And FWIW, the keyboard shortcut for MIDI zoom is shift+command+[ (or ]). |

Re: Why are my midi notes so small?
OK..so I understand the auto-sizing thing with region view. That makes sense to me. I went back and now I understand how to midi zoom and have it be set when I open up the track again. It's the midi zoom I was missing.
Thanks for the keyboard shortcut. I usually use the Alphatrack zoom but I'll work in the PT shortcut also. Thanks!

Re: Why are my midi notes so small?
Use the zoom toggle to make those midi notes big, even if they are small and out of the piano roll viewing range. Not a permanent solution unfortunately.

Re: Why are my midi notes so small?
I agree. I use Zoom Toggle all the time.

Re: Why are my midi notes so small?
I'm back to this issue after being away from editing midi for awhile. I'm trying to get this midi zoom to work and all I get is a zoom length-wise. How can I zoom width-wise to make the midi notes wider? Enlarging the midi track to extreme I still can't get the notes big enough.....surely there's a way for this.....I'm starting to miss 6.9 in a big way.

Re: Why are my midi notes so small?
Probably don't want to hear this but it looks like 8 will deal with this.
