Default Digi 002 or Digi 002r?

I'm getting a digi 002 system, and I was wondering what the real differences are between the 002 and the 002r. I heard about a latency problem with the 002r and I was wondering if there's a difference in the mic preamps they use. Is the quality the same? Also, is the control surface really useful, or could its functions easilly be replaced by just doing the same things on the computer with the mouse.
If i get the 002r i could spend the money saved on mics and plug-ins and such, is it worth it to spend the extra money on other things. Which plug-ins are essential and useful?
Thanks!!
