Default Recording Cymbals

My synth drums are passable, but as usual the cymbals suck. My neighbor has some nice Zildgiens (?) she'll let me borrow to record. I was thinking about swapping in the resulting sound files into my recordings as needed. Has anyone done this before? I've never recorded live drums so any help would go a long way.
I have:
(1) Rode NTK
(1) Apogee Minime
ProTools 6.4
More enthusiasm than experience.

So I set them up in my living room, roll back the carpets and. . .
How far away should the mic be?
Use compression?
Where in the room is best? Corners?
EQ?

This could be a fun little project that would make my recordings a lot better, or this could be a complete waste of time.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

EjA

I would setup in the center of the room. Avoid the corners due to reflections. Setup the mic at least 6' overhead. Experiment with mic positions to see what works and avoid compression. For eq roll off the bottom for more sizzle. Hope that helps

As it is the only thing you are recording, I would see if you can borrow another Mic as well. Have one 6 inches above at a 45 degree angle and have one 12 inches above at the other side same angle. This will give you a wider sound. Using both tracks in the mix at a 10 too and 10 past pan will give the cymbals a nice full sound.

I wouldn't put a mic within a foot of a cymbal, give it more than that in order to let the sound develop more.... if its an even decent room i might even put them two or three feet off then add that high end sizzle with eq.
