midi mapping

am i correct in understanding that i can use the "learn" function in the software instruments to learn controllers from my maudio controller? i am having a hard time getting this to work. i click "learn", choose the parameter, move a knob, and nothing. nothing happens. what am i doing wrong? is the mapping only for control surfaces?
